Warhammer 40K: Space Marine

Their Warhammer 40,000 universe (originally home to a popular tabletop game) is a grim and inhospitable projection, full of demonic sorcery, Imperial inquisitions, and Communist space aliens that look like rejects from Gundam Wing. There’s an awful lot of glowering and accusations of heresy, and everybody’s always shooting lasers at each other or hacking off limbs with chainsaws. Indeed, they immediately roped me in with their emphasis on small-scale tactics and unit micromanagement, as well as an exceptionally balanced roster of races. The first game (along with its two expansions) became the only RTS at which I’ve ever been anything approaching skilled, and the second expanded on the fun with a co-op campaign and a revamped combat system reminiscent of Relic’s other RTS opus, Company of Heroes. Both games were critically acclaimed, sold well, and generated a close-knit online community.

And it’s not as if Relic is the first top-tier developer to span multiple genres: Capcom, Rare, and numerous others have all made a point of stretching their boundaries, often with amazing results that set them among the Pantheon of all-time greats. So what Relic really has here is an opportunity: if they can make Space Marine work, they might well enter the discussion as one of the best studios in the world. If they can't, well... there's always Dawn of War III.From the limited footage that has been made available (and as you might guess from the title,) you play as one of four Space Marines, genetically-enhanced human super soldiers, hacking your way through vast mobs of green-skinned Orks with lightning hammers, chainsaw swords, jet packs, and a thick suit of powered armor that puts the Brotherhood of Steel to shame. It’s hard to exactly what the game will be like at this point, but frankly I’m excited to have a chance at experiencing the W40K universe on a more personalized level again. The last game I can remember that wasn’t a strategy game was Fire Warrior, a mediocre shooter for Windows and the PS2, and I’ve been waiting for something a little more substantial ever since.
