Since last year was dominated by action game releases, there were less than a handful of RTS games that were released. This year's a whole new story - action games have taken somewhat of a backseat, making way for the highest number of AAA strategy game releases we've seen in years! The game breaks away from the standard resource gathering structure and opts for a completely robust, action oriented spine that pays off many fold. Its sacrifice of base building for a completely battle-driven design helps quicken the pace of combat, keeping you on your toes perpetually. Be it the singleplayer campaign or multiplayer, the game boasts of some of the most fast-paced strategic action you'll ever come across.
Relic Entertainment's Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War II is one of the best RTS I've played in recent times. The best part about Dawn of War II is that even though it sacrifices some of the core traditional-RTS mechanics, it doesn't lose any depth. Instead of focusing on how to secure resource gathering routes or how to build your base so that the enemy doesn't catch you with your pants down, you have to focus on unit positioning (thanks to the cover system), suppressing fire, and capturing nodes to achieve victory. Here's a link for the game's review.
